Our Workshops
The 1 in 5 Initiative offers free workshops on a variety of subjects related to mental health and well-being to University of Ottawa students and community members. These one-hour workshops are offered both in French and English, in person or virtually.

Making the Best of Stress
This workshop provides psychoeducation on stress, focusing on its impact on the mind and body, and equips participants with evidence-based coping strategies. Participants will learn about the physiological and psychological mechanisms behind stress, the effects of chronic stress on health, and how to recognize personal stress triggers. Through interactive discussions and guided exercises, participants will leave with actionable tools to reduce stress and improve well-being.

Values-Based Living
This workshop explores values-based living, focusing on identifying personal values and integrating them into daily life. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of their values and how they can guide decision-making and goal-setting. Through practical steps, the workshop will demonstrate how to transform values into actionable goals. Additionally, participants will learn strategies to navigate challenges that could arise when living in alignment with their values, emphasizing mindfulness and acceptance.

Mental Health 101
This workshop offers an introductory overview of mental health, focusing on understanding basic psychological needs, recognizing common mental health disorders, and exploring available resources. Participants will learn how to identify signs of mental health challenges and discover practical tools to support their own well-being or assist a loved one navigating a difficult time. The session aims to empower attendees with knowledge and strategies to promote mental health and resilience.

Sleep Your Way to Mental Well-Being
This workshop provides an overview of the essential components of sleep and its critical connection to mental health. Participants will explore how sleep impacts overall well-being and gain practical tips to improve sleep quality. The session will also offer additional resources for when basic strategies are not enough, empowering attendees to take steps toward more restful and restorative sleep.

Standing Together Against Stigma
This interactive workshop explores the nature and impact of stigma, particularly as it relates to mental health and help-seeking. Participants will learn to recognize different forms of stigma and gain practical tools to challenge stigma in their communities. The workshop also offers guidance on when and where to seek help, empowering participants to support themselves and others with compassion and confidence.
